Pride & Prejudice & Zombies: Dawn of the Dreadfuls & A Contest!

Indeed, English manners to prevail in a novel filled with the flesh-eating infestation, a raucous baron intent on his prey – that of Jane Bennet, not the Dreadfuls! – and a cast of quirky character s that include: Capt. Cannon, a veteran of The Troubles, the first Dreadfuls “uprising”, who has no arms nor legs and is driven around in a wheel barrow by two men called, Left and Right Limb. Also included, are the (possibly) Mad Scientist, Dr. Keckilpenny, who attempts to understand the unmentionable threat, and the aforementioned Baron Lumply of Netherfield Park, who has a penchant for gin and chambermaids, and ot necessarily in that order.
The humour in the novel ranges from the witty, as earlier said, to several laugh-out-loud knee slappers. Most of which involve Mr. or Mrs. Bennet. Or a combination thereof, such as when Mrs. Bennet was almost mistaken for an Unmentionable herself whilst scratching at Mr. Bennet's bed chamber door in hopes of producing a male heir.
To be frank, when I first heard of the prequel, I was leery of the a writing style for this novel, thinking it would be a poor intimation to the original co-written gruesomely witty original. Nothing could be further from the truth. This satirical prequel to PPZ is a wonderfully crafted Austen-like tale, if she had been sitting around drinking in and evening with Percy Bysshe Shelley, Lord Byron, and Mary Shelley telling stories of the macabre and monstrous.
